Best-selling children's book author and illustrator Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges), his beautiful wife Marion (Kim Basinger), and their young daughter Ruth live by the sea in a quaint coastal town on Long Island. Adapted from a novel by John Irving – or rather the first third of A Widow for One Year – this provocative drama gives Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger the best roles they've had in years. Famous author Ted Cole (Bridges) and his wife, Marion (Basinger), have all the material comforts for an easy life, but they just don't get along. Neither has ever truly recovered from the deaths of their two sons in a car crash, and Ted deals with Marion's diminishing passion for him by engaging in a series of 'business. One summer, he hires a 16-year-old student named Eddie as his assistant, and the precocious teenager immediately becomes attracted to Mrs. Cole – who, in turn, is attracted to the boy because he looks like her eldest son. Basinger, on the other hand, is painfully vulnerable as an emotionally wounded wife and mother who find themselves drawn into an untenable relationship, partly out of sexual desire and partly out of unhealthy attraction based on the boy's resemblance to his dead son. .
