Black Painted Trim – 5 Guidelines On How To Use It!
You may have noticed lots of black painted trim - doors, windows, trim - in interior design magazines. What if you like the look of black painted doors or baseboards, but don't know where or how many? Suppose you want to use black painted trim somewhere for elegance or drama, but you don't know where or how. Here are some thoughts, inspired by a recent project we did in Alamo Heights that used black trim really well:1. If you want black painted moldings on your windows, make sure the windows are big enough! As you can see in this first photo of the breakfast room, the large windows are painted black. (We also painted all the trim and windows black on the outside of the house, as you can see through the windows here.) Small windows look even smaller when black, and they make the busier room. Statement windows are perfect centerpieces for black painted trim. Because this is a standout feature, you'll want to draw attention to this beautiful architectural detail, and painting it black will do just that! Inset glass doors look great painted black, especially with brass hardware! All other nearby trim remained painted white - the baseboards, crown moldings and all other trim in these rooms. But French doors visually function like large windows, after all. Painting them black "frames" the scene behind and adds a nice dramatic contrast. The only exception: All doors, door frames and baseboards in your home are painted black, so that the black "flows" from room to room. Otherwise, insulated plain black doors will look like “black holes” in your interior! (This doesn't apply to the glass doors, of course.) If we painted them black, the hallway would look like a giant set of piano keys! When the door frames are painted black to match the doors, the whole thing tends to appear visually massive and heavy. Also, I tend to think it looks clunky and "awkward" against the white baseboards that will probably go throughout your home. Finally, one last "final" thought, because I get asked this question all the time:
Sherwin-Williams "Tricorn Black" is a nice neutral black for these purposes. And if you have any doors or windows painted black like these, I'd love to see them!
